Uses for Flowers – Part 1

Now you may think there’s only a limited number of uses for flowers but my class at school have come up with a number of different ones which I’ll share with you over the next few weeks, but before I continue, have you taken advantage of the offer from the Cyprus Online Flowershop yet? Don’t forget to do it before the end of November – 15% off orders over 40 euros. Click here to visit the shop and just enter the code READNSAVE15NOV at the checkout.

OK so what did my class want to do with flowers? Well, on the local forum there’s an article about a young girl in the mountains whose family is struggling with the recession and the poor girl is not being fed properly. We wanted to help and so a girl suggested we buy a bunch of flowers from the local florists and split it into individual flowers, design a tag telling people what we are doing, to attach to the flower, and then sell them individually for five euros each. They’ve worked out that for a bunch of decent flowers such as roses or gerberas they can make between 100% and 400% profit, giving this to the worthy cause. I laud their enterprise, next is will they manage to pull it off? I’ll let you know!

Get Them Growing!

There’s no better time to introduce children to the joys of gardening and flowers than when they’re young enough to be inquisitive and yet old enough to be able to understand what they’re doing.

Take them with you to the florists and let them find their favourite flower. Most florists like Cosmea Gardens sell flower seeds too and by growing them together you’ll help your children to understand how we get flowers from a tiny seed.

With my class at school we grow sunflowers. They are fabulous, especially when they get to be taller than the children growing them. We then end up with tales of giants and lands where everything is big. At the end of the season when the seeds are set, they perform an addional purpose in providing seeds for the birds prior to the onset of winter.

Another good flower to grow is the Sweet Pea. Again, these are easy to grow and quickly provide flowers that children can pick and simply arrange to form a wonderful scented arrangement.

Once they’ve got the growing bug, the world is their oyster. I can remember growing Cinerarias and Schizanthus for gifts for my family when I was young.

So do something different this half term, visit Cosmea Gardens and get your children growing!
