Get Them Growing!

There’s no better time to introduce children to the joys of gardening and flowers than when they’re young enough to be inquisitive and yet old enough to be able to understand what they’re doing.

Take them with you to the florists and let them find their favourite flower. Most florists like Cosmea Gardens sell flower seeds too and by growing them together you’ll help your children to understand how we get flowers from a tiny seed.

With my class at school we grow sunflowers. They are fabulous, especially when they get to be taller than the children growing them. We then end up with tales of giants and lands where everything is big. At the end of the season when the seeds are set, they perform an addional purpose in providing seeds for the birds prior to the onset of winter.

Another good flower to grow is the Sweet Pea. Again, these are easy to grow and quickly provide flowers that children can pick and simply arrange to form a wonderful scented arrangement.

Once they’ve got the growing bug, the world is their oyster. I can remember growing Cinerarias and Schizanthus for gifts for my family when I was young.

So do something different this half term, visit Cosmea Gardens and get your children growing!
