Valentine’s Day is right here!!

I was given a jolt the other day when I found that my wife, who is usually totally disorganized, had purchased and secreted away a Valentine’s Day card for me. Those of you that read this blog regularly know that she’s very much a last minute kind of girl and one year was searching Platres, the Cypriot mountain village, on the actual day, for a card and gift. Having said that it was one of the more memorable Valentine’s Days with me convinced she’d find nothing and instead I got a fabulous and huge card with words like they were written for us and a naff but forever memorable pink stuffed rabbit on a spring that croaked ‘I love you, I love you’ with every slight movement! Now this year it’s my turn to be disorganised as I’ve yet to order flowers or a card. Still, she’s currently in the UK visiting her mother so I’ve got plenty of time to get things done. If you’re not so lucky in having your partner go away at the time you need to get things organised then don’t panic. All you need is a laptop and a credit card and you’re away without him or her even noticing. This is what you do…
Send yourself a secure email with your card details but not the security code, you’ll have to remember that one. Then whilst checking the computer for football scores or the latest soaps, quickly read the email whilst logged on to www.cosmeagardens.com. Now I’m wondering whether it’s possible to do the same with dinner for the big night too, meals on wheels – OK, maybe not a pizza or take away delivery, but a sumptuous three course meal with champagne? Valentine’s Day is around the corner!

Spring is (almost) sprung and a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. So said Tennyson and whilst spring is perhaps a little way away from most of Europe, in Cyprus already the spring flowers are out and people are coming out of their homes to enjoy the spring sunshine.
It’s time too that young men (and young women!) should be turning their thoughts to love and especially the love of their life.
This year Valentine’s Day is very special for it falls in a leap year and that means that ladies, you can take matters into your own hands and pop the question rather than wait for dilatory boyfriends to get to the point.
2012 should see an increase in the number of proposals on Valentine’s Day, repeating a pattern that has been seen in leap years in the last decade.  So guys, if you don’t want to be beaten to it, what should the plan be for Valentine’s Day? My tips for success are to have the card on the mantelpiece or on the bedside table so she gets it when she wakes up or gets up. That’s really important because it shows straight away that you haven’t forgotten the day. Next, get flowers delivered to her place of work. From what I understand that fulfils two purposes in the mind of a woman; the obvious in that it tells her that you love her but also enables her to have bragging rights over her colleagues but, and this is the important bit; the bouquet needs to be bigger than those received by her colleagues! You need to carefully consider your Cyprus’ florist – are red roses too common as well as too overpriced and what should be the alternative? It’s a good idea to be different but then will red carnations look cheap?
Try other little things for her like hiding little notes or gifts in her bag. Women’s handbags are so cavernous these days that avoiding her finding it too quickly (if at all!) shouldn’t be too hard and if she misses it on the day, there’s a good chance she’ll find it at some later date and so you’ll still get the appreciative response.
In the evening there’s the obligatory meal out usually exceedingly expensive because all the restaurants know it’s one of their biggest nights of the year. You will have had to book early or it could be a less than romantic take away. That said, if the weather’s nice enough, (OK maybe in Cyprus!) there’s a sort of shabby chic to getting fish and chips and sitting on a park bench somewhere underneath the stars with champagne to up the tone and maybe a romantic gypsy band to serenade her – as long as you haven’t kept it totally a surprise and she’s sat there freezing in a strappy dress she thought would be ideal for the restaurant of that TV chef!
Then, if it’s the big one, what about the ring? Do you choose it and hope she likes it, or do you pop the question with a paper ring with ‘IOU one engagement ring’ on it? The trick is, keep the moments light, avoid intensity, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Be My Valentine?

Yes it’s that time of year again when those with a partner want to remind them how much they love them and those who’ve caught the eye of someone they like hope to receive at least a Valentine card or if they’re luck, a beautiful bouquet.

I’m still apart from my wife, she’s in England and I’m here in Cyprus so it’s even more important that she knows that although I think of her every minute of the day, she’s especially in my thoughts on that special day for lovers.

Over the years I’ve tried different gifts for her, perfume, lingerie and jewellery but none has been more appreciated than flowers. Last year I ordered a bouquet of roses for her from Cosmea Gardens and they were truly beautiful. She loved them and after the reaction I got from her when she received them I’ve decided that this year, whilst we’re apart, I’m sending her another beautiful bouquet from Cosmea Gardens.

Valentine’s Day

Hi and thanks for joining me for our first steps through the world of cut flowers, bouquets and arrangements. I hope that by visiting me regularly, you’ll learn about the fascinating and beautiful world of colours and scents that have brightened homes and lives for thousands of years.

I love flowers. From my tentative years as a budding gardener aged 7, planting a riot of mismatched colour in my parents garden, through a lifelong interest in wildflowers and on to the look on my wife’s face when she notices the bouquet of fresh flowers in our hearth, flowers have played a big and very happy part in my life. Nothing raises the spirits like the gift of flowers from a friend. There doesn’t have to be a reason and I hope, like me, you’ll soon come to appreciate the difference that flowers can make to our lives.


I stole a quick glance at the calendar today amid the rush of day-to-day life and saw that it’s only two days until Valentine’s Day. If you’re not the wealthy type that’ll buy diamonds then you can’t beat a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Roses, it HAS to be roses, but did you know it doesn’t have to be red roses?

Rose colours have all kinds of meaning so you could send her a secret message by the colour of the roses that you send.

• Red roses signify passionate, sincere or romantic love

• White roses signify secret, worthy or heavenly love

• Pink are for perfect happiness or admiration

• Orange roses denote desire or fascination

• And red-tipped yellow roses are for those newly together as it says ‘Falling in Love’
